Overview
Overview
Langkawi is located on the northwestern peninsula of Malaysia and is an
archipelago of 99 islands at high tide and 104 at low tide. Situated closer to
Thailand than to mainland Malaysia (just 25km away), its waters are where the
Indian Ocean narrows to meet the Straits of Malacca.
Langkawi is located only 800km from the Equator and is blessed with year-round
warm temperatures and warm waters. The archipelago is famous for its white
beaches and the relaxed and its slow paced island life. However, the jewels in
our tourism crown are also the Langkawi Geopark and its natural treasures of
serrated mountains that are home to a vast array of birds, butterflies, reptiles
and animals.
Langkawi is a duty free Island that makes for a great value holidaying.

How Big is Langkawi?
How Big is Langkawi ?
Consisting of some 99 islands, the total land area of all the islands combined
is 47,848ha whereas the main island of Langkawi has a total of 32,000ha which is
about the same size as Penang or Singapore. Palau Langkawi being the largest
island within the archipelago is approximately 25km in length from north to
south and 40 km east to west or 478.5km2.
Topography
Langkawi Island is covered by 60% forest, mountains, mangroves and shrubs with
20% being agricultural land and 20%, developed areas. Of all the islands,
approximately 90% is forest and only three of the islands have some form of
development. The topography varies from flat coastal plains of Pantai Cenang to
the mountainous peaks of Gunung Raya (880m) and Gunung Machincang (713m). There
are also many sandy beaches on the main island numerous deserted beaches on the
other islands within the archipelago.

The population of Langkawi is approximately 64,000 and made up of 89% Malay, 8%
Chinese and 3% other races.
Weather
Weather
One of the more confusing things about Langkawi weather is that it is the
complete opposite to the East Coast of the peninsula. So when it’s raining
there, the weather in Langkawi is normally good. However, Langkawi in general is
a much drier rainforest that it’s East Coast counterpart even in the wet season
as the islands are located well away from the main mountain ranges. Even during
wet season it is very seldom that Langkawi experiences rain for extended periods
of time. During these wetter periods, it rarely rains for more than 2-3 hours at
a time.

Travelling by air is the most popular way for international tourists to arrive
and the international airport is clean, spacious and modern. Airlines flying to
Langkawi are
Malaysia Airlines from Kuala Lumpur (KLIA),
Silk Air from
Singapore, and
Air Asia from Singapore,
Firefly

Whilst Langkawi has been fortunate in being a relatively virus-free and healthy
destination, it is best to consult your medical practitioner or local travel
advisory on any vaccinations that maybe required.
Getting Around
Getting Around
Being a small island, Langkawi is relatively easy to travel around. In Malaysia
cars drive on the left side of the road. Direction signs tend to be in English
as well as Bahasa Malaysia but many road signs are in Bahasa so it’s worth
checking out the translations. Driving is quite relaxed although it’s best to
drive carefully especially in rural areas.
Taxis
Taxis are readily available and reception staff in resorts can make bookings for
you. The taxis work on a fixed priced basis and we do recommend you check the
rate card when your fare is quoted. Some taxi drivers speak better English then
others and they can prove to be very useful for around the island trips as they
can identify many points of interest. Taxis can be hired from the airport, all
hotels and major attractions.
Hire Cars
Roads in Langkawi are well signposted and in good condition so hiring a car for
a self-drive adventure is a good option. You will need to watch out for
motorbike riders and the occasional water buffalo that may wander on the road.
It is recommended that you use a licensed and insured car rental company to
prevent any unpleasant surprises in the event of an accident. While cars hired
from resorts and hotels maybe more expensive than those elsewhere it can be
assumed that they are insured.

Tour guides are available through most travel agencies and it is recommended
that visitors request trained and licensed guides who practice the principles of
responsible tourism.

The official language of Malaysia is Bahasa Malaysia however English is widely
spoken and usually to a high standard in the hospitality industry. In fact,
visitors who wish to practice the local language can be frustrated by locals
answering questions in English.
Currency
The currency of Malaysia is Malaysian Ringgit. Money can be changed in many
places from the airport to the banks in Kuah which tend to have the best
exchange rates.

Duty Free Island
Langkawi is a duty free port which means you can find real savings on high taxed
items such as cigarettes, alcohol and some electrical items.
Religions
Langkawi is predominately made up of Malays who are Muslims. There is however a
small percentage of Buddhists, Hindus and Christians on the island and most
religious holidays are celebrated.
Working Hours
Due to the importance of Friday prayers for Muslims the business week for most
activities in Langkawi is from Sunday to Thursday. Many shops and businesses
will be closed on Fridays, reopening after midday on Saturday. However this does
not apply to banks which are open the Malaysian wide hours of Monday to Friday.

History
History of Langkawi
Centuries ago, skilled storytellers on the mainland made a living from spinning
wondrous, spectacular tales of folklore, history, myths and legends of celestial
beings, demons, warriors, giants, beautiful maidens and gallant heroes. Langkawi
was inaccessible to local folk in those days and not many ventured to the
islands and stories of these mysterious islands developed into legends. The
Langkawi islands were frequented by pirates who made a living from plundering
passing boats and travellers who chose to sail in their waters. The myths are
still woven strongly into the lifestyle of the local people.

Local Legends
With a geological history dating back 500 million years, the islands contain
unique rock formations that stir the imagination and baffle the mind. Some of
the more colourful ones include;
The Family Feud - Gunung Raya, Gunung Machincang and Kuah
The various peaks on the island such as Gunung Raya, (the highest mountain on
the island), Gunung Machincang, Bukit Sewar, Belaga Pecah and Telaga Air Hangat
and the main town of Kuah were named according to the incidents which transpired
as a result of family feuds. These first three mountains were purported to be
humans while Belaga Pecah (meaning broken pot) was believed to be the spot where
a large pot containing gravy (kuah) was spilt after the pot, used as a missile
in the feud, broke there. A cauldron of boiling water was also used as a missile
in the fight and the spot where it landed became a series of hot springs gushing
into the air. These gave rise to Telaga Air Hangat (meaning hot well water).
Mahsuri’s Curse
Best known is the story of the Princess Mahsuri who lived in Langkawi in the
14th century. Mahsuri laid a curse on the islands following the wrongful
accusation that she had committed adultery while betrothed to the Sultan of
Kedah. When a soldier pierced a kris (dagger) into her bosom, he drew white
fluid instead of blood. This was viewed as a sign of her innocence. Others are
of the opinion that a white mist that suddenly enveloped the spot of her
execution was an illustration of mourning over her undeserved punishment.
Before she was killed Mahsuri laid a curse on Langkawi for the act of injustice.
She condemned the island to seven generations of bad luck. Thus, for the seven
generations, it had been a land of isolation and misfortune. The end of this
curse ties in with the start of tourism development in Langkawi.

Natural Highlights
Natural Highlights
Environmental Considerations
The waters around Langkawi can be slightly cloudy due to the sand base and
shallow waters but are warm and relatively safe. There are only mild currents,
though generally no surf and in the area is only a small numbers of unpleasant
sea creatures. However there are some things to be aware of for your safety and
the conservation of the natural environment:
• We do not recommend picking up and removing shells from the beach. Without
these shells we will not have a beach and hermit crabs will not have homes.
• Depending on the time of year and prevailing tides we sometimes have jellyfish
close to shore. This period is generally from January to March and it is
believed that these are not life threatening but you may receive a painful
sting. There are over 2,000 species of jellyfish worldwide and approximately 80%
of these have no effect on humans. For protection in these periods, we recommend
you swim in safely nets or use jellyfish protective suites.
• On some islands coral reefs are forming and it is recommended that you avoid
standing on the coral as it can give you a nasty cut. Avoid sea urchins (black
spiky creatures) as they have a painful sting.
• Be aware of tides and currents and keep an eye on your distance from the beach
at all times.
• Check that your jet skis and parasailing operator is licensed with appropriate
insurance cover.
Geopark
Langkawi Geopark is Malaysia’s first Geopark and is located in the far
northern corner of peninsular Malaysia with a total land area of about 478km².
Langkawi has been dubbed the birthplace of the region. Much of Langkawi’s
geological history was linked to occurrences in the old super continent Pangea
and southern hemispheric Gondwanaland dating back 550 million years ago.
The Langkawi archipelago with so many islands has gone through many geological,
botanical and zoological changes. Being next to the Isthmus of Kra in Thailand
and, being connected and disconnected to the mainland by rising and falling
water levels, a great morphology has happened to shape present day Langkawi. A
variety of birds visits the islands and, through their droppings, introduce new
species of plants. Reptilian species, high up on the food chain, reign here with
the absence of their wild feline neighbours and have become bigger. This has
afforded Langkawi many unique features which are seen best in the Geopark.
Mangroves are an essential part of keeping the ecosystem in balance as they act
as a nursery for large number of animal fish and shellfish species. A trip
through the mangroves presents a chance to see giant monitor lizards, snakes,
bats, a variety of birdlife and maybe even sea otters and dolphins.

Beaches
Langkawi’s beaches are what draw thousands of visitors to Langkawi every year.
They are renowned for their bright white colour and fine softness. They are
mostly clean and safe and have the added benefit of not being over-run with
hawkers disturbing those relaxing on the beach. Most beaches are accessible to
the public and have food outlets nearby.
Pantai Cenang
Pantai Cenang is probably the liveliest beach with an abundance of white sand
and an array of restaurants, bars, live music venues and watersport activities.
It is also a favourite place to relax at day’s end to watch the sunset.
Pantai Tengah
Pantai Tengah is a peaceful beach with a slightly steeper gradient and deeper
water. This is a favourite for relaxing with an array of watersports,
restaurants and bars.
Pantai Tanjung Rhu
Tanjung Rhu is one of the most beautiful beaches lined with casuarinas and 22km
from Kuah. It is generally quite peaceful with the occasional fishing and tour
boat sailing past.
Pantai Datai Bay
Pantai Datai bay is only accessible or through the Andaman and the Datai Resorts
and access is only for in-house guests unless you arrive by the sea. With less
development here, the waters tend to be clearer than those of Pantai Cenang and
Pantai Tengah.
Other Beaches in Langkawi
There are numerous other beaches (or pantai) such as Pantai Kok, Pantai Burau
Bay, Pantai Yuluk Yu, Pantai Teluk Baru & Pantai Senari near Rebak Island which
is used exclusively by Rebak Island Resort Langkawi – A Taj Hotel. As the
arcepeligo has so many islands, some guests like to be dropped off for the day
at one of several idyllic remote island beaches for a picnic, walk and a swim.

Flora and Fauna
Whilst many of our guests come to relax on the beach to work on their tan,
Langkawi’s natural beauty and amazing flora and fauna are the major draw cards
and therefore important assets to the region. Guests are welcomed to the area to
experience its beauty but are encouraged to assist in maintaining the land
through sustainable tourism.
Flora
Langkawi’s distinct wet and dry seasons have produced some unique and
fascinating plant life. During the wet season the island is a lush tropical
paradise that has huge growing capabilities but during dry season when it
doesn’t rain for months, the plant life adapts often by shedding leaves.
Another interesting phenomenon that has occurred over thousands of years is that
the plants have learned to “communicate with each other” and have scheduled
non-conflicting flowering periods so that they all have the opportunity to be
fertilised and propagated by the birds, bees and the wind.
Some particular features of the Langkawi flora are the incredibly slow-growing
cycads (Cycas clivicola), slipper orchids and, rattans that grow up to 175m in
length. In fact one square kilometre of Langkawi’s rainforest maybe home to up
to 150 different tree species.
Fauna
Langkawi has a diverse range of animals, reptiles and birds. Reptiles and birds
on the island can grow up to 20% bigger than on the mainland and this is
displayed well by the water monitor lizard which can be spotted growing up to
2.5m in length! Bird watching in Langkawi is fantastic with up to 230 species
calling Langkawi home throughout the year. Of note is the great hornbill with a
wing span of up to 1.5m.
Langkawi has been awarded UNESCO Geopark status for its beautiful geo-heritage
features dating back 500 million years. Our island is blessed with amazing flora
and fauna, below are some points that you may find interesting.
• Langkawi has 238 species of birds, which is double the number in the UK, and
354 recorded species of butterfly
• While certain studies of lowland tropical rainforest in Malaysia have revealed
many tree species, the forests of Langkawi are not as species rich but they also
contain large numbers of species.
• Langkawi is home to an unusual flying mammal called a colugo or flying lemur.
The island is also the habitat of squirrels, dusky-leaf monkey and long-tailed
macaque.
• In terms of marine life, over the course of the year, three whale species
visit the island, along with the whale shark which is found year round, four
species of dolphins and sea otters can also be spotted.
• The monitor lizard also calls Langkawi home, and it can grow to similar
lengths as the Komodo dragon.
• The mangroves are simply beautiful and we highly recommend that you take the
opportunity to explore them. If you are feeling up to a little exercise,
definitely consider the sea kayak through the mangroves.
• The Langkawi Cable Car is a, deservedly, award winning and popular tourist
attraction. It has the longest single span and is the steepest in the world.

Alor Star is located in the northern part of Kedah, 30km across the Straits of
Malacca from Langkawi and 300km from Kuala Lumpur. The town was originally
called Kota Star until 1943 when it was changed to Alor Star. Government
departments, royal sites, many heritage buildings, museums and cultural centres
are located here.
Some of the state’s tourism attractions include the Rice Museum which is a
fitting tribute to Kedah’s most important agricultural crop. For those who love
rock climbing and trekking, Mount Keriang is the place to visit. Malaysia’s
former Prime Minister Tun Mahathir Mohamad house is also located in Kedah and is
a popular place for locals to inspect. Other recommended places of interest

Golf
Datai Bay Golf Course
Nestled between the northern foothills of Gunung Machincang and Datai Bay, the
6,000m long course is made up of fairways of Bermuda grass and greens of
tifdwarf grass. The course undulates in all directions and a lost ball is
probably….lost. You will see monkeys in the trees and hornbills in the air so
it’s a bit of an eco experience as well. It is a 30-minute taxi ride from Pantai
Cenang to the course. Uniquely, this course has a 19th hole that is not a bar!
To finish you will need to clear 160m stretch over the sea, a rocky shore and a
bunker. The club house is well serviced with a pro shop, restaurant and full
buggy facility.
Datai Bay Golf Club sales@dataigolf.com
Gunung Raya Golf Course
As the name suggests, the club lies in the foothills of Mount Raya. It is the
most popular course on the island, being less expensive than the Datai and
easier to play. The 6,377m course is turf with Zoysia Matrella grass ending with
superb greens of Tifdwarf Bermuda. You will see an abundance of wildlife on your
way around this stunning setting of mountains and mangroves. The first nine
holes are deceptively forgiving lulling you into a false sense of security
before you reach the 13th, 14th and 15th where the trees, lakes and bunkers are
ball magnets. Facilities include an open driving range and pro shop, club house,
café and changing rooms. Buggies are essential and these are plentiful.

99 Degrees East Golf Course
Langkawi may soon host international golf events with the development of two 18
whole world class golf courses.
The plan is a part of a RM2.8 Billion township,

The first nine holes should be playable by June 2009 and the following 9 holes
by January 2010.

you will go through sections of the islands rainforest on wires approximately
10m off the ground in the tree canopy itself, finishing off with a flying fox
run. It’s exhilarating and requires a moderate level of fitness and a sense of
adventure.

Self Drive
Driving around the island of Langkawi at your own pace is definitely the way to
go for those who prefer to see the island at their leisure. Cars can be hired in
many locations around the island or through your hotel but we recommend you use
a reputable and licensed operator. Most rental cars from hotels are insured.
Enjoy the island under your own steam. Langkawi’s roads are in good condition
and are well signposted. It is useful to know that BERHENTI means STOP. Hotel
concierges can assist with a map of the island. Possible drives include:
• The Cable Car and Oriental Village
• Telaga Tujuh – Seven Wells
• A drive over to Datai Bay
• Lunch at the top of Gunung Raya
• Tanjung Rhu Beach for some sunbathing

Getting Married in Langkawi
Getting Married in Langkawi
A wedding on the golden sands of Langkawi is truly a special event. Whether it be a small or large function there are a number of locations and options from which to choose. For many, the legal wedding formalities are performed at the local Registry Office but it can also be arranged for the officer to come to a location of your choice by applying for a special license.
Regulations and Procedures
As in every country there are a number of things that must be done and forms to
be filled out before your marriage can be solemnised. Please note that you must
be in Langkawi for seven days prior to the wedding day.
You have a choice of three different procedures to getting married - all three
have the same legal effect.
1. Marriage at the office of the Registrar of Marriages
2. Marriage through a religious ceremony, custom or usage such as a temple or
church where the temple/church official is appointed
3. Assistant Registrar or marriage by special license from the Chief Minister
Firstly you will need to gather together the following documents;
• Passports accompanied by a photocopy of the data page and date of latest entry
page into Malaysia.
• Original full birth certificates
• One coloured passport-size photograph
• Application form "Borang JPN KCO1" for normal or special marriages
• Affidavit of marital status such as a certificate of no impediment
• If previous marriages were terminated by divorce, both parties must submit
original or certified copy of final or absolute divorce decree. If terminated by
death of a spouse, submit original or certified copy of the death and marriage
certificates.
• A copy of the passport of both witnesses
Marriage application forms, translation application forms and the special
license form can be obtained from the Registration Office in Kuah. Please note
that all forms are in Bahasa Malaysian so a translator will be needed for non-Bahasa
Malaysian speakers.
Once you have all your forms filled in and documents checked you will need to
make an appointment to have the forms signed by the Court Registrar at the
courthouse before making an appointment with the District Officer to have the
marriage approved. Please note that this process can take up 4-5 hours. After
approval, the forms need to be lodged back at the Registry Office. This process
can be done up to 21 days prior to the wedding but should be done at least two
working days prior to the wedding to avoid complications.
If you are solemnising your marriage at the Registry Office you will need to
make an appointment with them. You will need to take into account working days
and public holidays. If you have a special license then you will need to arrange
the time and date that you wish the ceremony to take place with the Registry
Office.
Key Contacts
Check out your Embassy/High Commission or Consulates website in Malaysia for the
correct procedure for your country. The process does differ slightly from place
to place in Malaysia but check out:

Government site for this
Wedding Organisers
It is advisable to appoint a wedding organiser due to the three organisations
that require information and the possible language barrier. Check with your
hotel if they complete their own or please feel free to contact the following
